River harbour, cable car and gateway to Val d'Intelvi.
Why this area
Argegno is a small municipality of 679 residents on 4.3 km², 15 km north of Como and 50 km from Milan, where the Telo torrent meets the western branch of the lake at the mouth of Val d'Intelvi. Roman in origin, the village takes its name from the consul Publio Cesio Archigene.
It retains a 13th-14th-century Romanesque-medieval arched bridge over the Telo, a gorge and the remains of an 18th-century forge; the 17th-century Sanctuary of Sant'Anna closes the harbour scenically. The signature asset is the Funivia Argegno-Pigra cable car, opened in 1971: a twin-cable system climbing 653 metres of vertical in 4 minutes at an average 71% gradient (steepest in Italy), 5.50 EUR return ticket.
