on Lake Como, end-to-end.
Silent medieval hamlet clinging to the western shore.
Why this area
Brienno is a hamlet of just over 330 residents on 9.1 km², 16-17 km north of Como along the SS340 Regina, between Carate Urio and Argegno. The village preserves its medieval fabric intact: stone houses falling sheer to the water, vaulted alleys and stairways dropping from the road to the lake.
The reference monument is the 11th-century parish church of Saints Nazaro and Celso with 16th-century stained glass, while the small lakeside Sant'Anna on the Via Regina has an 11th-century bell tower among the oldest on the Lario. Historic evidence includes La Turascia, a Byzantine tower converted into a 17th-century plague lazzaretto referenced by Manzoni, and the World War I Cadorna Line mining tunnels carved into the cliff.
