Nesso lies on the eastern shore of the first basin of Lake Como, halfway between Como city and Bellagio, on a 15.03 km² territory with elevations from 199 to 1,417 metres and 1,070 residents spread across eight hamlets. The Celtic name means mooring place and the village is first documented in 951.

Its signature landmark is the Orrido di Nesso, a gorge carved by the Tuf and Nosée torrents with a roughly 200-metre vertical drop and a final waterfall plunging directly into the lake, reached via Piazza Castello and 270 stone steps down to the Roman-era Ponte della Civera.
