Varenna sits on the eastern shore, in the Province of Lecco, 60 km north of Milan and 20 km from Lecco. The village (812 residents, 11.2 km²) is geographically small but strategically decisive: Varenna-Esino-Perledo station on the Tirano-Lecco-Milano line is the only direct rail node in the heart of the Lario.
Founded by tradition in 769 AD by fishermen, it welcomed refugees from Isola Comacina after 1169. Top draws include Villa Monastero (former Cistercian monastery, 11th-12th c.) today a museum and conference centre, Villa Cipressi with its terraced gardens, the Castello di Vezio with panoramic views and falconry shows, and the seasonal Fiumelatte stream geological phenomenon.
